Microscopic Analysis

Microscopic Analysis of Laser Processed Features

In an effort to deliver the highest standards of quality to our customers, extensive in-house quality testing and monitoring of the laser converting process is performed with a specialized microscope. The utilization of microscopic technology allows LaserSharp FlexPak Services to ensure high quality laser processed results in flexible films. Whether examining laser perforations or score lines, microscopic analysis of flexible packaging immediately reveals the state of each laser processed feature. By using a microscope to analyze samples that cannot be seen with the untrained eye, the slightest defect is quickly identified and addressed.

Using the highest quality and most technologically advanced microscopy equipment and software available in the market today, a magnified image is made quickly available for measurement, dimensioning, and visual checks. Perforation diameters can be qualified, score depths and widths are easily measured, and substrate layers are clearly distinguishable.

LaserSharp FlexPak Services utilizes a digital, optical microscope (light microscopy), allowing either real-time display or image acquisition in black and white or color. Once images are captured they are easily dimensioned and can be saved and sent to quality teams or customers for review for quality assurance. Images are also saved to LaserSharp FlexPak Services’ database and can be retrieved at a later date for further review.

Magnification of up to 500 times is possible using our specialized microscope and optics. Cross sectional images of the film allow our quality assurance staff to easily identify and analyze material structure and width of each layer, while precisely measuring the depth of scored lines. Top view images are also available and are used to clearly identify patterns, perforation arrays, and hole diameters. Additionally, top view images allow our quality team to analyze material texture and the edges of the film, in order to identify and correct possible defects.

Microscopic analysis of flexible films is just one of many in-house services offered by LaserSharp FlexPak Services to ensure quality. Other services such as tensile strength and oxygen transmission rate testing are additional methods of ensuring that the laser processed material you receive is of the highest quality. These quality checks can be performed as frequently as is specified by you or your customer and subsequent results will always be made available for review.
